History

It was established in 1918. It was directed by Professor S.I.Metalnikov - one of the founders of psychoneuroimmunology; Professor E.К.Меуег - entomologist; Academician
P.P.Sushkin-world-famous ornithologist (also a well-known anatomist, palaeontologist, lepidopterologist); Professor Puzanov-multidimensional zoologist, zoogeographer, and expert in the Crimea; Professor V.M.Borovskiy - specialist in comparative psychology and reflexology, psychic activity of animals and instinct related issues; Professor S.L.Delamure - prominent researcher of helminths of oceanic mammals; Professor A.A.Skriabin - outstanding expert in helminths of cetacea and one of the founders of the University zoological museum. The Department is now directed by Professor M.V.Yurakhno, Doctor of Biology

Faculty Members

Professor M.V.Yurakhno (zoology of invertebrates, general parasitology);
Assistant Professors: V.V.Treschev (zoology of vertebrates, comparative zoology of vertebrates, zoogeography, ecology of animals), R.P.Stenko (comparative anatomy of invertebrates, biology of helminths), A.I.Miroshnichenko (general ichthyology, methods of school experiment).
Assistants: S.V.Leonov (computers in zoology), V.V.Soloviov (the Crimean fauna) and A.A.Striukov (fundamentals of taxidermy, museum studies).
Students graduate as biologists specialising in zoology.

Areas of Research

Study of helminths of oceanic mammals as well - as self-sustained and parasitic animals in the Crimea. In recent years, growing attention is focused on study of the Crimean fauna, especially fish, land mollusca and spiders.
The Department offers postgraduate programs.

Academic and Educational Relations

are maintained with the Institute of Southern Seas Biology, the South Research Institute of Sea Fishery and Oceanography, the Crimean National Park, the NASU Institute of Zoology, Shevchenko Kiev National University, California University (die United States), Valencia University (Spain), etc.
