History

It was established in 1918, the time when Tavricheskiy University was opened. The Department was organised by the Corresponding Member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences Professor N.I.Kuznetsov, who set up a laboratory for plants morphology and anatomy, and Academician of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences Professor V.I.Palladin, who set up a laboratory for plants physiology and microbiology. A botanical room was opened on the basis of these labs and later transformed into the Department of Botany. The Department is now directed by Assistant Professor S.F.Kotov

Students graduate as biologists specialising in botany.

Areas of Research

Recreation of beech and oak woods in the Crimea; structure of halophyte vegetation communities in the Crimea; anthropogenic influence on flora and vegetation; and study of populations of rare and endangered plants.
The Department offers postgraduate programs.

are maintained with Shevchenko Kiev National University, Donetsk National University, the NASU Institute of Botany, Nikitskiy Botanic Garden, the Institute of Ethereal Oil and Medicinal Plants, the Crimean Republican Institute of Advanced Pedagodical Education, the Crimean Republican Committee for Environmental Protection, the Crimean Republican Committee for Forestry, the RAS Botanic Institute, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and St. Petersburg State University.
