History

The Department of General Physics is one of the oldest departments of the Taurida National V.I. Vernadskiy University. It was organized in 1918. At that time it was called the Office of Physics. The first Head of the Office of Physics was the outstanding physicist, the founder of the St. Petersburg school of the physicists Abram Fedorovich Joffe. Later the Office of Physics was renamed into the the Physical Institute (1924).The Institute was located in the large building at Lazaretnaya (now Student) Street. The meteorological station, optical station were located at the Physical Institute, and since 1928 – the seismic station of the Academy of Sciences.
Basic scientific directions had important significance for the Crimea – actinometry, optics of the atmosphere and meteorology.
In 1924, when the Department was headed by Professor I.I. Tikhanovskiy, the study in atmosphere optics were considerably enlarged. On June 18, 1926 the optical station was organized, where the regular observations of the atmospheric-optical effects began: the measurement of the solar intensity, transparency of the atmosphere, the polarization of sky light and others.
The staff of the Department created seismic station. In 1929 aerological observations began. The organization of the branch of the Chief Geophysical Observatory was planned. The death of Professor I.I. Tikhomandritskiy in October 1930 hindered the plans. Outstanding scientists, such as Academician A.V. Joffe, the author of fundamental works on the theory of liquids and atmospheric electricity, polarization and luminous absorption; the Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences Ya.I. Frenkel; Nobel prize winner, Academician I.E. Tamm, Professor T.A. Afanaseva-Ehrenfest; Professor V.G. Kastrov; Professor I.I. Popov and others worked at the Department. From 1938 to 1956 the Head of the Department was Associate Professor N.A. Lebedev. Under his management, studies of intensity of the ultraviolet radiation of the Sun, polarization, luminescence and photochemistry in the semiconductors and dielectric structures were carried out.
From 1956 to 1972 the Department was headed by Associate Professor R.G. Badalyan, who was also the Dean of the Physico-Mathematical Department of Pedagogical Institute.
In 1973 the Department was headed by Associate Professor L.M. Kuchikyan. The Department began working on economic contracts, that helped obtain equipment for the specialization “Quantum Electronics”. Providing works by the economic contracts made possible to set up material and technical base for the specialization, to organize scientific school. Many leading scientists, who now work at the Department, were graduates of this scientific school, namely A.V. Volyar, V.I. Shostka, A.M. Bykov.
Since 1999 the Department of General Physics has been headed by Professor, Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Science A.V. Volyar, who organized a new direction of studies and school for training of highly skilled personnel in the sphere of nonlinear, topological and singular optics. Under his management, the present instructors and teachers of the Department S.N. Lapaeva, T.A. Fadeyev, V.G. Shwedov, Yu.A. Yegorov; Associate Professor K.N. Alekseyev; research assistant A.N. Alekseev successfully defended candidate theses.
At present the Department is staffed exceptionally by its graduates: the Head of the Department, Prof., Dr.Sci.(Phys.-Math.) A.V. Volyar, Associate Professors, Cand.Sci.(Phys.-Math.) A.M. Bykov, V.I. Shostka, I.V. Dzedolik, S.N. Lapaeva, T.A. Fadeyev, Yu.M. Dubinyanskiy, G. Shwedov, Yu.A. Yegorov.
