History

The Department of Russian History was created on October, 6th, 1918 at historical-philological faculty. In 1918-1920 the Department was headed by the future Academician, the winner of state awards B.D. Grekov.
At the same years at the Department outstanding scientists – Professor G.V. Vernadsky, Private-Associate Professor A.I. Markevich worked. From 1925 to 1934, interest to history of Russia disappeared, and the Department did not work. In 1934 the Department of History was created that was headed by Associate Professor F.S. Zagorodskikh. In 1937 the Department of History was divided into the Departments of History of the USSR and of World History. The Department of History of the USSR was headed by Candidate of Historical Science A.S. Rabinovich. During Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the Department continued working in evacuation in Makhachkala on the basis of the Dagestan S. Stalskiy Pedagogical Institute. The united Department of Marxism-Leninism was created that was headed by Associate Professor F.S. Zagorodskikh (from September, 23rd 1941 to August, 1944.) In 1944 the work of the Department of History of the USSR under direction of F.S. Zagorodskikh was renewed. In 1961 the Departments of History of the USSR and of General History were united again into the Department of History that was headed by Associate Professor (the future Professor) who had come back from the war front S.A. Sekirinskiy. In March, 1964 the Department of History of the USSR was restored and up to 1984 it was headed by Professor M.M. Maksimenko. These years Associate Professors: F.P. Kuntsevich, A.G. Myakshin, G.P. Gubenko, S.G. Kaschenko (the future Professor), L.Y. Andreev, N.V. Timoshenko, A.I.Krotov, L.P. Vakatova, G.V. Sigaeva, S.B. Filimonov (the future Professor and Head of the Department of Russian History), etc. worked at the Department. Under direction of Professor M.M. Maksimenko, post-graduate students: V.V. Vasiliev, L.L. Kuzmina, P.V. Shautin, V.A. Roman, T.A. Chebanenko defended master's theses and remained to work at the Department. Now all of them are Associate Professors.
In 1984-1989 the Department of History of the USSR was headed by Professor P.I. Garchev. During this period N.E. Dementyev defended his thesis for a doctor's degree and N.F. Dunduk – candidate’s degree.
From September 1985 to September 2002 the Department was headed by Professor N.E. Dementyev. In 1992 there were changes in curricula of the Department, the stuff of the Department was considerably reduced and the Department of History of the USSR was transformed into the Department of Russian History. From September 2002 to the beginning of 2003 Associate Professor V.V. Vasiliev was acting director of the Department.
From January 16th, 2003 to present time the head of the Department of Russian history has been Professor, Doctor of Historical Science S.B. Filimonov – the leading expert in the field of archival studies and source studies in Crimea.

Scientific Work

The basic scientific interests of Department are connected with research of history of Crimea (when it was part of Russia from 1783 to 1954), studying of history of Russia in the context of world history and the Soviet period of history of Ukraine.

Education

Students’ training is conducted according curricula approved by the Department, Faculty and Educational Department of the University.
It includes courses, lectures and special courses, carrying out seminars, practical works on archival studies and museology, course works, degree works, credits and examinations. At the first and second year students have 2 modular controls a year.
There is a postgraduate study at the Department.
