History

The bases for the formation of the Faculty of Chemistry were established in the first days of existence of the Taurida National University (1918), among one of the first structural divisions there was a chemical laboratory and the chemical department created by A.A. Baykov. A.A. Baykov put foundation for the scientific research of the department. Its employees developed problems which had important national economic value for the Crimea, in particular, the chemical compound of waters and dirts of Sivash and also the preparation of iodine and bromine from them were investigated.
In 1972 – 1975 due to the fact of the reorganization of the Crimean pedagogical institute to the Simferopol State University three departments of the natural sciences faculty were created on the basis of Chemistry Department and that fact contributed to the creation of The Faculty of Chemistry.
The Faculty of Chemistry was established in 2000 as a result of division of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The Faculty of Natural Sciences was one of the oldest in the structure of the University. Sources of the Faculty of Chemistry had known such scientists like A.A. Baykov, D.P. Turbaba, A.F. Sagaydachny, P.T. Danilchenko and A.F. Perekhod. Throughout the years a common thread of the faculty activity was the collective's aspiration to prepare the highly skilled staff. Nowadays the following departments of the Faculty function: the Department of General Chemistry, the Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry and the Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry. All departments are headed by professors. There is a problematic laboratory at the Faculty. As a result of long-term researches two scientific schools were instituted at the Faculty. One of them is headed by Professor V.F. Shulgin, here researches are devoted to the synthesis of coordination compounds of metals in the first transition row with carboxylic acids and their nitrogen-containing derivatives. Two doctorates and five master’s theses were defended. The second school is headed by Professor V.Y. Chirva. Scientific research is conducted in two directions at this school. One of them is synthesis and biological activity of adjuvant on the basis of the immunosuppressive peptide. The second one is allocation from plants of ginseng triterpenes glycosides family, an establishment of their structure and biological activity. As a result of these researches two doctorate and over 10 master’s theses were defended.

Specialities

The Faculty prepares staff on such specialties like "Chemistry", "Biochemistry" and carries out specialization on Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, and also Chemistry and Biochemistry of Wine.

Structure

Since 2000 the Faculty is independent structural division.

Nowadays  the teachers and employees of the three departments take part in preparation of experts on specialties 6.070300, 7.070301, 8.070301 – Chemistry and 6.070300, 7.070303, 8.070303 - Biochemistry
Department of General Chemistry;
Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry;
Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry.

Scientific Work

Research work of the Faculty was conducted in following directions:

  • "Coordination compounds of carboxylic acids and their nitrogen-containing derivatives";
  • "Study of the structure and biological properties of carbohydrates and carbohydrated compounds and biopolymers";
  • "Research of chemical properties of liquid-phase and solidphase disperse systems”;
  • "Development of theoretical and applied chemistry basis solutions and technologies of chemical processes";
  • "Research of oxidation-reduction transformations in natural water environments”;
  • "Research of adsorptive properties of natural biopolymers, zeolites and bentonites";
  • "Study of the interaction between alginic acid and metals' cations;
  • “Development of the generalized mathematical model and algorithms of data processing titrimetry".

    A certain number of scientific themes (economic agreements), financed by Ministry for Education and Science of Ukraine (234/03 - "New biologically active substances on the basis of synthetic peptides and natural triterpenes glycoses"; 200/00 "Study of influence of the structure of synthetic derivative peptides and natural triterpenos on their biological activity"), the State fund of basic researches (213/01 - "Creation of a new immunomodifier, possessing protective action against a human immunodeficiency virus and opportunistic infections"), a number of other establishments, the enterprises and commercial structures (themes 623/03; 628/04; 609/02; 611/03; 603/02).
    The results of the researching work of the Faculty employees for 5 years are reflected in more than 90 published scientific articles, 3 patents, 5 applications for inventions, and also in more than 160 reports published theses at scientific conferences of various levels, including regular Ukrainian general and organic chemistry conferences and also the largest international conferences.
    Preparation of the scientific staff in postgraduate study and doctoral studies is actively conducted at the Faculty. For the five years' period 4 master's theses (L.A. Yakovishin, I.E. Ametov, E.A. Sidorova, E.A. Sobolev), and also one thesis for a doctor's degree (V.I. Grishkovets) were defended.
    Graduates Profile
    Graduates of the Faculty have the fundamental preparation which is necessary for maintenance of a modern level of teaching Chemistry at schools, technical schools and institutes. Besides, experts can perform engineering work at the chemical enterprise, spend research work in scientific institutes, and work on the modern equipment, using computer techniques. They are competent in the questions of the environmental protection as well.

Conferences and Seminars

The departments of the Faculty are organizers of the following scientific conferences, symposiums and seminars:

  • annual scientifical-practical seminar Scientific Bases of Producing Medical Products (Gurzuf);
  • Ukrainian conference (with the international participation) Applied Physical Chemistry, once in two years, (Alushta);
  • International scientifical-practical conference New Technologies of Production and Application of Biologically Active Substances (Alushta);
  • Visiting sessions of Scientific Council of NAS of Ukraine on a problem “Inorganic Chemistry” (Simferopol, Gurzuf).
