History

The Department of Physical Geography was established in 1973 and at first was named the Department of Physical Geography of Continents and Oceans. From 1982 to 1994 it was named the Department of Oceanology, and it has had its contemporary name since 1994. The Department was organized by Professor Yu. A. Shcherbakov, the graduate of Moscow University, who was specialized in studying landscapes and directed the Department from 1973 to 1974.
From 1974 to 1980 the Department was headed by Associate Professor, the Candidate of Geographical Science Grigoriy Evdokimovich Grishankov, the graduate of Crimean Pedagogical M.V. Frunze Institute, a known landscapeologist. At that period Crimean landscapes are actively investigated by the staff of the Department. For the first time the landscape map of Crimea in the scale of 1:100000 was composed on the basis of investigated pattern of landscape foundation, and the map of mountainous Crimea in the scale of М 1:200000 (the author – G.E. Grishankov). Native zones of Crimea were viewed as a single paradynamic system. The map of morphostructures of mountainous Crimea is made, the absence of two, elongated in parallel, cuesta ridges in the foothills of Main Ridge of the Crimean mountains was substantiated, as well as hollowness of landscape structure of the foothills, the role of position in forming the nature of mountainous Crimea, etc. Geographic zoning was viewed non-traditionally, as multiple-factor phenomena within landscape levels of continents. The problems of landscape components genesis and landscape sphere, landscape integral properties, geographic bodies and their fields were studied. The future of geography was seeing as study of geographic processes with colloid system taking the leading place.

At that period part of the students of the Department began their specialization in Geography of Ocean. The subject "Geography of Ocean" was taught, and practical training on ships of Hydrographic Service of the Black Sea fleet and in Sevastopol branch of the State Oceanographic Institute were carried out. Alongside with it, part of the students was specialized in Physical Geography and Study of Landscapes. Further development of oceanologic direction at the Department was connected with arrival of the expert-oceanologist, the graduate of Moscow State University Yu.F. Bezrukov. He started reading special courses on General Oceanology and other oceanologic disciplines. Quality of field practices was sharply increased, as students began participating in scientific expeditions to Atlantic Ocean under the international program "Polymode" (studying of mesoscale whirlwinds of Gulf Stream), to Pacific Ocean, and also in researches of the Black, Azov and Mediterranean seas.
From 1980 the Department was headed by Associate Professor, Candidate of Science (Geography) Yuriy Fedorovich Bezrukov. The Department invited Associate Professor I.P. Ved, Candidate of Science (Geography), a climatologist; T.I.Shpekht, a geodesist; Associate Professor V.A. Kriulkov, Cand.Chem.Sci., an expert on space researches. Later, Associate Professor B.A. Vakhrushev, Candidate of Science in Geology and Mineralogy, who started reading Geodesy and Sea Geology; Associate Professor G.N. Skrebets, Candidate of Science (Geography), an expert in the field of cartography; Associate Professor M.Y. Lombrozo, Candidate of Science (Geography), an oceanologist; Associate Professor O.A. Troshchenko, Candidate of Science (Geography), an oceanologist, came to the Department. Afterwards young, promising employees joined the staff of the Department – E.A. Kudryan, M.V. Penno and I.A. Dmitrieva, former graduates of the Department.
In 1980-1990, in a period of intensive oceanologic researches of the Soviet Union in the World Ocean, the Department conducted a lot of research work. From 1981, the Department worked on economic contracts at the following directions: the research of physical and chemical structure of vortical formations in the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific Oceans; the study of hydrologic conditions of formation and subsistence of internal waves in Black and Mediterranean Seas; the calculation of the sound speed in the Black Sea (all those themes were conducted under the direction of Associate Professor Yu.F. Bezrukov), aerospace and hydrochemical methods of research of the Azov and Black Seas waters; development of methodical bases of aerospace monitoring of the World Ocean for the sake of sea geology; researches and experimental check of surface quality and calibration monitoring of onboard means of remote sounding (under the scientific direction of Associate Professor V.A. Kriulkov); development of theoretical bases of management of mudflow processes on the territories of Crimea and Carpathians and making the map of natural complexes of Crimea (under the scientific direction of Professor A.N. Oliferov).
Since 2005 the Head of the Departmen has been the graduate of Simferopol State University (now TNU) Professor, Doctor of Geographical Science Ekaterina Anatolievna Pozachenyuk. Alongside with the further development of the oceanologic line, the Department actively develops landscape and geoecological scientific lines. Landscapes of Crimea and adjacent water areas are investigated, active theoretical and applied works on geoexpertology are conducted, the international contacts of the Department are being developed. Work of postgraduate and doctoral study gets more active.

Scientific Work

Presently the Department works on the theme "Steady Development of Territories and Water Areas" (the head Professor E.A. Pozachenyuk). The purpose of the first stage of scientific researches of the Department was development of theoretical and methodical approaches to steady development of territories and water areas. Theoretical and methodical bases of steady development of territories and water areas have been established by the example of the Crimean region. The technique of studying of various types of aqua landscapes has been developed. Oceanographic, geographical, geoecological and geomorphological peculiarities of natural geosystems of the Azov-Black Sea basin have been studied. Some features of physico-geographical zoning of the World ocean and the Azov-Black Sea basin have been revealed.
The technique of studying of landscapes of the sea coastal zone has been developed. Conception of landscape unity of ground and water parts of the coastal zone has served as theoretical basis of the technique offered, that testifies to expediency of its study as a paragenetic landscape complex. Accordingly, methods of studying, indicative and classification attributes of allocation of paragenetic landscape complexes, typification and the methodical scheme of their description have been offered.
The Department continues study of the influence of seaports activity on ecological condition of adjoining water area. The special attention is given to a modern ecological condition of water area of Kerch and Feodosia sea ports. We also study pollution dynamics of coastal waters of Southern coast of Crimea.
By results of theme performance two monographies, four manuals, a series of scientific articles have been prepared.
Mudflow as extreme ecological situation is studied (Professor A.N. Oliferov). Inspection of anthropogenous mudflow high waters in the Belogorsk region has been conducted. Sites of water and mud flows have been allocated. The results of field works were recorded in the database "Mudflows of Ukraine". Mudflow caused a significant damage to villages where it passed - 2 people were lost.
Parameters for modelling of mudflow dangers on the territory of Crimea have been collected and systematize. The table "Designation of Partial Basins and Partial Areas in Mountainous Crimea on Homogeneous Conditions of Mudflows Occurrence” has been made. The map of mudflow basins, partial basins and mudflow reservoirs in scale 1:200 000 has been made.
In 2006 58 publications were made at the Department, including two monographies of Prof. E.A. Pozachenyuk, 14 manuals and methodical instructions. The Department conducts greater scientifical andmethodical work. Prof. E.A.Pozachenyuk has published 10 monographies and manuals, more than 10 manuals belong to Yu.F. Bezrukov, a number of monographies and manuals have been written by Prof. A.N.Oliferov.
