Education

In the course of structural and substantial transformations which occured in 2006 at the Department, the staff accepted a number of leading principles:

  • Modern economic geographer should understand laws of development of the globalized world, be able to explain specificity of political aspirations and orientations of various countries, master laws of functioning of world economy, understand trends of formation of civilizations and their cultures, be able to estimate correctly transformation processes in the Ukrainian society.
  • The profession of the geographer should be demanded by society. With this purpose the social and economic geography should have such training courses which allow graduates to acquire the knowledge to compete at the labour market. The task of saturation of special courses with economic disciplines, Sociology, Linguistics (Foreign Language), Polytology, etc. at the Department therefore is necessary.
  • The present stage of development of social and economic geography is characterized by expansion of perception of fundamental concept "geographical space". Today to everyone who is engaged in geography, it is necessary to understand, that banal concept of geography as a science about sightseeing and distribution of facilities is hopelessly obsolete. The image of geospace became manysided and is more multidimensional. The problem of development of a new sight at what the geographer who is learning modern transformations of geospace should know and study therefore is necessary.
  • The special attention should be given to technicalization of geographical knowledge – introduction of methods of the information analysis and geoinformation technologies.
  • Social and economic geography should prepare specialists, estimate opportunities of regional resource base and offer strategy of optimum use of these resources. The concept "resources" should be treated in this case widely – as material, spiritual and even virtual formations. The task of preparation of geographers-managers to operate the territory is necessary.

In conformity with the listed principles, the curricula of the Department are built. They have interdisciplinary character and include not only geographical, but also other courses promoting the development of specialists’ wide outlook on economic and social geography.
Preparation of specialists is conducted in conformity with recommendations of Bologna Process. During last three years, the staff conducts the control of students’ knowledge using the credit-modular system accepted in the European high schools.
