History

The Department of the English Philology has been training students in the specialization of "The English Language" since 1944, when the faculty of the Foreign Languages, comprising the English, French and German Departments was established on the basis of the two-year courses in foreign languages, offered at the Pedagogical Frunze Institute. The first lecturers were A.M. Krilitchevsky, Associate Professor and B.S.Jusim. A.G.Altunin, who became the head of the English Department later, was among its graduates (1948).

In 1957 The Faculty of the Foreign Languages was closed.

In 1967 the Faculty of The English Language was opened, headed by the senior lecturer A.G Altunin. For some years it trained students for teaching English at Secondary School. It had two departments: the Department of the English Language, headed by A.G Altunin and the Department of the English Philology, headed by I.G. Dolinina, Associate Professor. Other members of the staff were: N.K. Varypajeva, A.I Ischin (later the Dean of the Faculty), T.Ja. Verbova., T.N. Malygina. Theoretical courses were provided by the Professors: A.I. Germanovitch and V.N.Migirin; Associate Professors: M.I. Novikova, O.I. Bajkov and others.

In 1972 the English Faculty was reorganized into the Faculty of the Foreign Languages of Simferopol State Frunze University, which later became the Faculty of the Germanic Philology and in 1993 it was returned its previous name.

In order to optimize the teaching process as well as to develop new curriculum and advance scientific work at the Faculty, some Associate Professors from other universities were invited in 1979-s. Those were: L.K. Zhukova, L.Ya. Tsvet, T.P. Abaschev, A.V. Timoschenko, S.I. Kucher, Professor Ju.A. Dubovsky and others. British philologists worked there during some years. In 1980-s V.A. Kunitsyna and A.P. Zherdeva defended their PhD theses and M.A. Novikova obtained her Doctoral Degree in Philology.

In 1986 the two English Departments were combined and the Department of the English Language was formed, which later on, in the year of 2000 was renamed the Department of the English Philology.

In 2004-2005 Luise Gabron, a specialist in methods of teaching English, carried on weekly seminars and workshops for the staff of the Department.

In October 2005 L.K. Zhukova, Associate Professor, Candidate of Philology was given a rank of the "Honoured Specialist in Education of the Crimea."

At present the Department of the English Philology provides BA, Specialist and MA degree courses in the specialization of "The English Language and Literature" and MA in Philology.
