History

The Biological Faculty was established in 2000 as a result of division of the Faculty of Natural Science. The Faculty of Natural Science was one of the oldest in the structure of the University. Prominent scientists such as N.A. Kuznetsov, A.A. Bajkov, V.I. Palladin, E.V. Vulf, A.P. Sushkin, I.I. Puzanov, T.T. Lunkevich and others were at the beginning of the Faculty. D.P. Turbaba, S.P. Popov, A.F. Sagaydachny, P.T. Danilchenko, N.A. Troitskiy, V.M. Borovsky, S.L. Delyamure, M.S. Shalyt, A.N. Kiselev, A.F. Kiselev and others made a lot for the Faculty.

Through all the history of the Faculty runs the striving of its employees to prepare high-qualified specialists for country’s economy on the basis of perfection of research and educational work. The decision of this task was promoted by creation of scientific schools at the Faculty: zoological – Professor S.L. Delyamure, physiological - Professors A.M. Stashkov, N.A. Temuriants; extensional strengthening and development of material and technical basis, establishment and expansion of contacts with academies of science, foreign countries, their scientific centers.

There were numerous expeditions of scientists of Zoology Department on the basis of Soviet-Norway and Soviet-American agreements to different regions of World Ocean (Arctic, Antarctic, Pacific Ocean), participation in World exhibitions (Japan, Okinawa); international and republican congresses, conferences, meetings and symposiums of representatives of all departments of the Faculty. Significant event in the life of the Faculty was creation of agrobiostation (1956), which became the base for conducting educational field practice. Station was built and developed thanks to efforts of many employees (A.F. Pepekhod, N.L. Strelets, A.N. Kiselev, A.P. Panevskiy, I.G. Gubanov, L.P. Popova, I.G. Kozhevnikov, M.V. Sivtsev).

From 1972 the Faculty passed to University educational plans, and from that time its present structure began to form, the basic specialities (Biology, Biophysics, Landscape Gardening Facilities) and forms of preparation of bachelors, specialists and masters were determined.

General Information

Now Biological Faculty of TNU is the center of biological education and science in Crimea. 54 persons – among them 11 professors, doctors of sciences and 34 candidates of sciences – conduct educational, research and pedagogic work.

At 6 departments of the Faculty more than 500 students of day-time and correspondence forms of training are taught. There are 4 problem laboratories (3 – at the Department of Human Physiology, 1 – at the Ecology Department); the specialized council accepting master's theses on specialities "Physiology of Humans and Animals" and "Biophysics" works; the Biotechnological center is opened. There is a Zoological museum at the Faculty – one of the best in Ukraine; a scientific herbarium collected by prominent botanists; entomologic funds, including tens thousand pieces of insects of Crimea; field practice stations in settlements of Krasnolesie. In 2007 the Center of Correction of Human Functional State was opened. Among the nominal grants founded for the best students of Taurida National University, two – of Academician V.I. Palladin and of Professor G.F. Morozov – are awarded to students-biologists for success in study and research work.

Graduates of the Faculty work in scientific, medical institutions of Crimea and the south of Ukraine, lecture in high schools, colleges, teach in elementary and secondary schools. A plenty of graduates of the Faculty work in our country, in Russia and other CIS countries, and also in the countries of the far abroad – the USA, Canada, Germany, Israel, Saudi Arabia, countries of Africa, South-Eastern Asia, Latin America. Their successful work is promoted by the high level of theoretical and practical preparation provided by the curriculum.

Education

The Faculty prepares bachelors, specialist and masters in three specialities: "Biology", "Biophysics", "Landscape Gardening Facilities". Theoretical studies are complemented with field practice in botany and zoology which follows the first and second years of study regardless of the further specialization of students. After their third year, students have their specialized practice which corresponds to the profile of their respective Department. In the fourth and fifth years, students have obligatory pedagogical practice in secondary schools. There are the following specializations at the Faculty: "Zoology", "Botany", "Human and Animal Physiology", "Medical Biophysics", "Ecology", "Plants Physiology and Biotechnology", "Biochemistry".

Scientific Work

The staff of the Faculty carries out researches on problems of ecology and flora and fauna, problems of modern neurophysiology and magnetobiology, medical biophysics. Researches of influence of biologically active substances on development and morphogenesis of plants, development of modern methods of biotechnology through the use of tissue culture characteristics which are grown up outside of the organism are carried out. Much attention is paid to environmental issues; collections of scientific works titled “Ecosystems of the Crimea: Their Protection and Optimization", “Proceedings of Tavrida National V.I.Vernadsky University (Biology/ Chemistry series)” are published.

The following scientific schools have been established at the Faculty: zoological (parasitelogical) school – Professors S.L. Delamure, A.S. Skriabin, M.V. Yurakhno; and the school of magnetobiology and neurophysiology - Professors A.M. Stashkov, V.G. Sidiakin, N.A. Temuriants, I.I. Koreniuk, etc.

Contacts

Scientists of the Faculty constantly participate in international conferences, symposiums, the international expeditions, world's fairs. The faculty maintains contacts with educational and scientific institutes of Crimea, Ukraine, neighboring and distant foreign countries (Russia, France, Italy, Spain, Canada, the United States, etc.).
