The necessity of the foundation of higher educational
institution in the Crimea was put forward in August, 1916 at the session
of Province Zemstvo of Taurida.
In March, 1917 after the coup the court palaces
in Livadia turned out to be empty in the Southern coast of the Crimea.
It occured to the professors, living in Yalta proposed to use these buildings
for the establishment of the University, consisting of 2 departments: physics
and mathematics and Medical Departments. physics and mathematics and Medical
Departments..
Several premises of Livadia Palace and Oreanda
had been given to the University by January, 1918 reading lectures for
the students of the first year begun at physics-mathemats and medical departments
in May,1918. The resolution of the Crimean Government to establish the
University of Taurida in Simferopol was aplopted in August, the 30 , 1918
and the official opening of the Univeversity of Taurida was on October,
the 14th, physics-mathematical department being one of the main departments.
Brilliant mathematicians taught at the University
at the period, representing the leading mathematical schools of that time.
Shortly after the foundation of Physics-Mathematics
department according to the proposition of the professor N.M.Krylov, who
in January, 1919 handed in a memorandum to the Council of the University
of Taurida, the cabinet of mathematics was founded.
In the period from February till November, 1919
the cabinet of mathematics had donea lot.
A.A.Baikov became the head of the department
in 1921.
The academic staff of physics-mathematical department
joined the main pedagogical staff in October, the 1st, 1924.
Simferopol State University, named after Frundze
was opened by the order of Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR in
February,1972 .
Due to these and other reasons Physics-mathematics
department was divided into 2 undependent departments: mathematics and
physics.
Mathematics Faculty was formed in its present
